Dr. John Kappas, PhD, was a Hypnotherapist and founder of the Hypnosis Motivation Institute located in Tarzana, California. The core of his teachings are principally Freudian but hold a universal esoteric concept of duality and opposition. This article will deal primarily with the concept of that duality, how it is developed in the child and how we can then predict an individuals motivations in our own every day relationship.

John Kappas identified that in every relationship there are two personality types, one who builds an emotional wall and is more distant than the other, and a second who is much more insecure, requiring more frequent reassurances from the first. This dichotomy develops from childhood and so we can see how deeply it is engrained in our subconscious as we begin to delve into the studies of this predictable behavior pattern. It is important to note about the following explanation that no person is 100% of either personality type, but in every relationship each person leans towards one particular type. What is Kappasinian Hypnosis?

The style of hypnosis known as Kappasinian Hypnosis is named after Dr. John G. Kappas, Ph.D.

Dr. Kappas is the author of several books on the subject of hypnosis and its applications, with the 3 most popular titles being The Professional Hypnotism Manual, Relationship Strategies, and Success is Not an Accident.

Prior to his passing in September of 2002, he had a career spanning over 30 years as a clinical hypnotist, and during that time he founded the Hypnosis Motivation Institute (HMI), a highly regarded college of hypnotherapy in Tarzana, CA, which continues to operate today.

In support of hypnotists’ legal right to practice, and to set a new standard for certification as a hypnotherapist, in 1972 Dr. Kappas began the Hypnotherapists’ Union (AFL-CIO) Local 472The Union continues to maintain a higher standard for certifying hypnotists than any other certifying board in the United States.

In addition, Dr. Kappas founded the American Hypnosis Association as an on-going education forum for hypnotists across the United States.
